Character Design is a important part of many aspects of story writing, movies, and books.
Character Design heavily depicts how people will feel when they see a character. It helps depicts how someone might expect a character to act or what the character does, explain a character's life/lifestyle, and overall help you visualize events that include the character
Besides visual appeal character design can be used to define character expectations. These expectations can range from how a character acts, what they do, and their position in a work. Examples are like giving face covers which can give a sense of mystery, or suit or a tailored outfit which can give a people a feeling that the character has wealth or power. This design concept can goes as far as simply using shapes to convey how a person might feel about a character. A good example of this the animated show Steven Universe. Character Designs in this show are mostly simple and are designed around simple shapes as a base of the overall design.
The best example of this is the trio characters of Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl
These three characters were designed in ways where their shapes and sizes match their personality
- Garnet is designed with mostly rectangular shapes which make her look stronger. Garnet is the leader of the trio and she comes off as a pretty well rounded as a character that handles issues with a straightforward.
- Pearl is designed with triangles and sharper points which give her a sharper look. Pearl comes off as stricter than the other two and often gets into quarrels with Amethyst because of their clashing personalities.
- Amethyst is designed with rounder and smoother shapes. This reflects how she's the most nonchalant of the trio, and is rather carefree an is reflected in her design as it lacks edges.
